Purifying Sound
Returning from the spiritual splendor of India, I have noticed a shift in my pattern of showing up, attuning to what serves me and where to serve, and what to release. All without thinking about it and instead, trusting this inner wisdom that steps forth to be the guide.
India is steeped in spirituality, which is evident in the way life is lived. This often includes daily visits to places of spiritual significance or pauses to be still. It feels like a genuine outpouring of service to the greater good, to the Divine.
Before entering a place of worship, often a Hindu temple, which are found in cities, towns, villages, and throughout the forest and countryside, there is an invitation to ring a bell near the entrance. The sound purifies us so that we can be more present to the deity to whom the temple is dedicated.
This recognition that sound purifies has stayed with me. Our environments are full of sound, even more so in India, where the friendly beep of horns and baaing of sheep mingle with shouts of greeting and the activities of life. The intentional use of specific kinds of sound to purify invites us to release our thinking so that we can feel the vibrations. As the mind relaxes, the body relaxes, and the overstimulated sympathetic nervous system can take a break to rebalance.
Sound can be a single chime, like the one pictured, or it can be intentional vibrations that you create. Sound is a powerful tool that can be used to heal the mind, body, and spirit. It can be used to calm the nervous system, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote relaxation and well-being. While I personally offer and experience sound baths that include gong and crystal bowl vibrations, intentional access to sound is readily available wherever you are… and it is free!
This can include the sound of your breath as you inhale and exhale, the internal sound of a word, phrase, or mantra, or the external sound of you repeating that same word, phrase, or mantra softly, aloud, or as a whisper. The sounds of nature, such as the sound of the ocean waves or birds chirping, has been proven to have calming and relaxing effects. You can also hum. All of these intentional sounds can calm the nervous system and vibrate all the cells of our bodies in harmonious movement.
Experiment and notice what sounds invite help you feel more calm, relaxed, and joyful. Observe what vibrations help to release tension, invite relaxation, and balance.
In addition, there are two sound offerings this weekend for your experience! Try it out!!
