Inviting Authentic Responses: ‘I’m of an unpleasant disposition’

The scenario of a client candidly responding to my inquiry as to how they were doing resulted in the response of: "I am of an unpleasant disposition." This has prompted an ongoing reflection on the authenticity of our interpersonal interactions.
In our societal script of exchanging pleasantries, we often expect or provide superficial responses like "fine" or "okay," brushing aside genuine feelings. Yet, embracing honesty, as advocated by the principle of Satya, invites us to acknowledge and honor the raw truth of our emotional state. This departure from the norm offers a refreshing opportunity for genuine connection, allowing individuals the possibility to share their innermost feelings without the pressure of immediate resolution.
Similarly, when responses veer towards the neutral "doing okay," it's essential to recognize and respect this sentiment, creating space for further exploration if warranted. Perhaps, situation and space conducive, an additional encouragement like ‘what does that feel like for you?’ invite the conversation towards exploration.
Embracing a more nuanced inquiry into one's "state of being in this moment" encourages introspection and genuine dialogue, fostering deeper connections.
Yet, there exists the very real possibility that connection within our own body awareness is not established, that we really are not in touch with how we are feeling emotionally, physically, or mentally. Rather we tend to be past or future focused which is anchored in the energy of thought/ mind.
One way to tune into our state of being is via the ‘energetic diffusion technique.’ This welcomes a pause to feel, just feel …including the option to feel into an unresolved situation or a sensation in the body. This powerful approach, pioneered by Kamini Desai, invites us into a place where we are less focused on doing and welcomed to a place of noticing. This approach moves beyond doing and invites us to connect with what is real in the moment, into a space of mindful awareness.
For those seeking to delve deeper into this practice, the 'Feel to Heal: Introduction to Yoga Therapy' course offers an immersive journey into the exploration of energy centers and embodied experiences. The ongoing invitation is to consistently pause to see how we are feeling in this moment and develop the increasing capacity to notice, simply notice without needing to fix or change one little thing. Ultimately, the invitation extends beyond momentary self-reflection; it beckons us to cultivate a lifelong commitment to noticing and honoring our inner experiences. We chose to develop a way to connect with our state of being, we are in touch with what is and begin to be free from the need to fix or change ourself, a situation or another person.
As we try to offer non-judgmental presence to those we meet and to ourselves, it reminds us that the most important relationship we have is with ourselves. This relationship informs all other relationships, including that with Source. And, the ongoing realization is that this is a practice; we fall down, get up, and explore again and again and again, with the knowing that each of us simply desires to be seen and to see ourselves as we are, with acceptance and openness.
